Aims – Awareness raising among participating countries on prevention and disposal of POPs and obsolete pesticides;
– Building capacity on obsolete pesticide management, disposal and prevention;
– Better information exchange among participating countries; and
– Greater stakeholder involvement in prevention and elimination of POPs and obsolete pesticides.
Key project achievements (as of April 2012) – Total of 148.3 metric tonnes of obsolete pesticides safeguarded in Belarus
– Total of 65 metric tonnes of obsolete pesticides safeguarded in Azerbaijan
– 82 experts from 13 countries trained in different specialties (inventory, risk assessment, safeguarding) from Jan 2010 – Dec 2011

Title Demonstrating and Scaling Up Sustainable Alternatives to DDT for the Control of Vector Borne Diseases in Southern Caucasus and Central Asia

Budget USD 5.392 million [= USD 2.310 million cash provided by the GEF, Green Cross Switzerland + USD 3.082 million in-kind by different organisations]
Project countries Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan
Main organisations involved National governments, UNEP, WHO, Milieukontakt International, GC Switzerland
Aims – Demonstrating the applicability and cost-effectiveness of alternatives to DDT for vector control in the selected demonstration sites;
– Developing national capacity for planning and implementation of vector control through integrated vector management;
– Identifying and managing DDT stocks and wastes; and
– Coordinating dissemination and sharing of country experiences among countries and regions concerned.
Key project achievements (as of April 2012) – First field tests of alternative vector control methods done during malaria season 2011
– Concept of integrated vector management for Central Asia and the Caucasus formulated
– Work on inventory and safeguarding of obsolete pesticides coordinated with other projects to avoid duplication
